Head Brewer Position

Haw River Farmhouse Ales is currently interviewing candidates for Head Brewer for our small brewery team. Brewing & Production
• Lead brewery team through creation of recipes, production of wort, fermentation and packaging of all ongoing Haw River beer brands
• Collaboratively design and brew new seasonal beers and one-off beer brands
• Play an active role in the daily brewing and fermentation process, completing tasks as needed and managing team members to achieve results
• Collaboratively manage our barrel-aging and mixed-culture program to maximize efficiency and quality

Ongoing Operations
• Create and edit spreadsheets/calendars to manage the production schedule in order to monitor progress, increase efficiency, plan & project, and avoid unwanted issues
• Enforce OSHA guidelines and manage safety compliance
• Oversee cleaning, sanitation and cold side maintenance
• Manage and maintain production schedule and labor needs based on current and anticipated inventory & scheduling
• Ensure overall brewery cleanliness and safety
• Develop relationships with key suppliers to optimize quality, reliability, and pricing, and manage inventory of ingredients and supplies on an ongoing basis
• Organize and manage sourcing locally-grown ingredients from growers and farmers
• Become proficient with brewery operations software or systems in use

PR & Events
• As needed, serve as a public and media face of the head of Haw River Farmhouse Ales’ brewing operations
• Participate in events and internal & external beer education sessions, as needed

Manage
• Work closely with all brew staff to improve communication and efficiency
• Oversee quality control/yeast maintenance/tasting sessions to ensure quality and consistency
• Write and manage Standard Operating Procedures for brewery staff and develop training materials
• Manage inventory (raw materials, brewhouse supplies, finished goods)
• Maintain brewhouse and production records, manage & prepare regular tax records and documents

Growth & Expansion
• Assist in maximizing the execution of our brewery expansion into 90 additional barrels of fermentation space
• Address and resolve new challenges in the face of a brewery expansion
• Work to discover and source new ingredients
• Participate in the hiring process of additional needed brew staff
• Collaborate to expand our barrel program
• Actively participate in weekly discussion concerning upcoming brew ideas and all logistical items being faced at that time

Qualifications
• Advanced understanding of and proficiency in all aspects of brewing
• 3-5 years of increasing responsibilities in a commercial brewing facility, ideally brewing at least 1,000 barrels annually
• Ability to operate forklift, hand truck, pallet jack, and other warehouse equipment
• Superior attention to detail and professionalism
• A positive attitude and skills working as part of a small team
• An unyielding desire to make the best, most creative beer possible
• Flexibility & creative problem solving abilities surrounding changing demands
• Ability to stand for long periods of time
• Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to lift or move heavy products ranging from up to 165 lb
• Ability to work in a wide variety of temperatures and conditions
• Willingness to learn duties as they arise in correlation to growth and expansion
